Understanding God's Ways

"Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day" (Ps.119:97).

"I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, for I keep your precepts" (Ps.119:99-100).

Those in Christ naturally want to understand him and his ways and his will for us more deeply. How? Psalm 119 helps us to know at least part of an answer: Our understanding will deepen with meditation and obedience.

Spend more time pondering God's instructions. Spend more time considering how they bear on your daily routine. Spend more time talking to yourself about the implications of various Bible passages and asking the Bible questions. Spend more time talking with others about these things, sharing your insights, hearing theirs, praying together for wisdom and discernment. All of this is part of what it means to meditate on God's testimonies, laws, precepts, etc. Ask God to give you a love for his instruction. Such love will manifest in regular meditation on his ways.

And then, submit to those things! Do. Obey God's testimonies, laws, precepts, instructions, commands, etc. Love God according to his precepts. Love people according to the same. If you can't apply what you think you know, you probably don't know what you think you know. Obedience deepens our understanding and helps to clarify God's intentions. Jesus said "If you abide in my word... you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32). If you abide, then you will know. Not - if you know, then abide.

Meditation and obedience deepens our understanding of God and his ways. May the Lord help us.
